Description
298 pages. Based on the diary, letters of private Bellard of the 5th New Jersey Infantry. He also did watercolor sketches to illustrate the work & these are here as well. He served in the Army of the Potomac in 1862-3, seeing action in most major campaigns. In his final year of enlistment he served in the provost marshal's guard keeping the peace in the bars & brothels of Washington. He never intended this for publication & it didn't turn up until the 1960s. One of the great accounts of a low level soldier in the war.
